Character Information Name: Doug Ramsey aka Cypher Age: 19 Fandom: Marvel Comics Point In Fandom Taken From: Post-Necrosha Job/Title in Fandom: freedom fighter and student Alignment: Good
Brief History: In Bullet points!
* Doug Ramsey was born to Philip and Sheila Ramsey, unaware he was a mutant.
* A friend of Kitty Pryde, the X-Man Shadowcat, who he met after she moved to Westchester County to join Charles Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. Both shared an interest in computers and video games which brought them closer together.
* Recruit by Emma Frost for the Massachusetts Academy in hope of inducting him into her adolescent Hellions to serve the Hellfire Club's sinister needs, and was later saved by the New Mutants.
* The techno-organic alien Warlock arrived and battled the New Mutants in the confusion that erupted, and they asked Ramsey for help in communicating with the alien, revealing their secrets to him. Douglas succeeded and chose the codename Cypher, becoming one of them.
* Felt useless in battle, even though his powers often came more in handy then others.
* During a battle, when a villain called the Ani-Mator aimed a gun at Wolfsbane while she was fighting others, Doug hurled into the way, getting shot twice by the Ani-Mator.
* He was resurrected by Eli Bard, a servant of Selene, who reanimated him with the aid of the Transmode virus.
* Cypher, under Bard’’s control, attacked the New Mutants. Doug was freed from Bard's control by Warlock wielding Magik's Soulsword.
List of Abilities/Powers: Cypher has the superhuman ability to translate any language in any form whether it is spoken or written regardless of its origin of being natural or extraterrestrial. Cypher performs this ability easily without having a hard time on picking the appropriate words to use. Furthermore, Cypher can also decode computer languages. This incredible translation allows him to easily get the thought of the message no matter what kind of language has been used.
Upon his resurrection, Cypher's ability to understand all language has been incorporated into the ability to understand the meaning conveyed by all things. Cypher now sees everything as a language, allowing him to understand and manipulate pretty much any system. He has shown the ability to read body language; decode hidden messages in intonation and inflection of speech (revealing the inner monologues of individuals); decode combat viewing a fight as a language to be interpreted, allowing him to defeat all the New Mutants at once; decipher and manipulate data in a manner that rivals hypercomputers such as Master Mold. The true limits of how he can apply his new ability are unknown.
Cypher is permanently infected with the transmode virus, but it was rewritten by Warlock in such a way that it does not infect others when he touches them, and does not need life essence to keep him alive.

It's weird, how we make things easier on ourselves, somehow, trying not to see all the little patterns around us, the clues that would lead to realizations, things we don't want to know.
It feels weird, anyway, to me. But then, I have always been a little weird in my own right, seeing more deeply in patterns most do not. I see and hear and feel those patterns and they slide into place, make sense to me, sense i don't really want to know. Who wants to know everything about everyone around them? Not me. And yet, that is exactly what happens to me, all the time.
I see languages, I see codes, and I see patterns, everywhere I go. I can't help but see them, and I can't help but know what they mean. This is my gift and curse. I am Cypher, far more than I ever was Doug Ramsey.
And people wonder why I spend so much time with computers! |

Normally, Doug was more than happy to hide in the computer section, ignore the world, and see if he couldn't create something new, solve new problems, or design a new piece of software, be helpful, somehow. He wore suits, or comfortable clothing, and sat in a chair until he collapsed. That was Doug's idea of a good time. Always had been.
Today, however, he was out of the lab, and wearing gym clothing, and... completely out of his mind. Yep.
Apparently, he had to go through further physical training, self defense and combat techniques. He wasn't sure that was a good-- no, strike that, he was very sure this was a bad idea. He was...well, inept wasn't even close to a bad enough word for how bad he was at physical combat. He had said this. Several times. In e-mails. Apparently, they had stopped reading them after the seventh one.
He shook his head as he peered into the Gym, then edged toward some weights. Maybe if he just made an appearance and worked out a little, they would see that as enough? Surely, they didn't really think he was going to improve that much, not after accidentally knee-capping one trainer and nearly decapitating another.
He sighed again and headed for the equipment faster, doing his best not to look up or around, or attract any attention. |
